ABOUT

My story.

I’ve spent the past twenty years climbing across the UK and internationally—from gritstone edges and mountain ridges to high-altitude objectives and remote first ascents. I began climbing as a student at university, drawn to the Lake District’s outcrops and the sense of freedom they offered. It quickly became a lifelong pursuit: a way to explore the world, connect with others and challenge myself in wild places. Climbing has given me a sense of purpose, community and perspective and I’m passionate about sharing that with others.

I now live in Penrith, on the edge of the Lake District, with crags and mountains just minutes from my door. My work is rooted in climbing—running Ullr Adventures, delivering training for the military, contributing to outdoor events and initiatives and offering consultancy for expeditions and leadership development. Whether its guiding classic routes, coaching technical progression or supporting teams in remote terrain I’m immersed in the climbing world both professionally and personally.

Alongside my civilian work, I continue to serve as a British Army Officer. Since leaving the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, my demanding military career has taken me through several testing operational tours and leadership roles in complex environments, shaping how I approach risk, decision-making and team dynamics. That foundation of discipline, adaptability and resilience informs every aspect of my guiding ethos.

My qualifications

I am qualified across a broad range of mountain and climbing disciplines, including;

  • Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor

  • Rock Climbing Instructor

  • Winter Mountain Leader Award

  • Summer Mountain Leader Award

These allow me to go safely and professionally to some of the most special places in the UK and share them with other people. In addition, I also hold Emergency First Aid certification and the Military Alpine Mountain Leader—an internationally recognised qualification under the UIAA. I’m proud to be a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI).

My experience

I have led teams on 6000m mountains in the Himalaya, on first ascents in the remote and wild Greenland and Ice Climbing inside the Norwegian arctic circle. At the other end of the temperature spectrum I have led teams trekking from the Dead Sea to Red Sea in Jordan, ascending Mt Kenya in Africa and rock climbed in Mojave Desert. These tough experiences have shaped my leadership and skills in cold environments. In the past 12 months, I have been mountaineering in the Romanian Carpathian Mountains and attempted to climb Mount Logan (5959m) the highest mountain in Canada experiencing -40'C temperatures.

At Ullr Adventures, I believe in guiding skills and shaping adventure—helping people build confidence, competence and connection in the mountains. Whether you’re seeking technical instruction, guided climbs, leadership development or expedition consultancy, I’d be happy to hear from you.
